SCENDO SUBITO
Alex Pinna
23 Sep. – 18 Nov.
Alex Pinna returns to BABS Art Gallery with a new solo exhibition, bearing a title as ironic as it is evocative: “Scendo subito” (“I’ll be right down”), on view from September 23 to November 18, 2025.
Playful and lighthearted, the title evokes the image of a woman constantly on the move, caught between the relentless rhythm of everyday life and a deep need for beauty. At the same time, it serves as the starting point for a broader, poetic reflection on the nature of the artist’s jewel and its role within the language of contemporary sculpture.
The exhibition marks a significant moment in Pinna’s creative journey, as he experiments for the first time with the encounter between materials that appear antithetical at first glance: rope, a stylistic hallmark of his work, and precious metals such as gold and silver, introduced in this new phase of his research with surprising harmony. From this combination emerges a delicate yet powerful balance, speaking to the tension between fragility and strength, between what is essential and what is rare, between gesture and meaning.
On display are three earrings, seven necklaces, and one bracelet, accompanied by several sculptures that engage in dialogue with each other in a fluid and immersive path. Each piece represents a natural extension of the body, conceived not only to be admired but also to be worn. For Pinna, indeed, jewelry is an intimate, portable sculpture—inhabiting the personal space of the wearer, transforming into gesture, memory, and symbol.
The genesis of these works is rooted in years of experimentation with rope, a material long favored by the artist for its tactile, narrative, and metaphorical qualities. In this new collection, the sinuous, lightweight forms of his figures find a fresh definition through his collaboration with Matteo Bonafede, a goldsmith of rare mastery, with whom Pinna has developed a profound technical and creative dialogue.
Equally fundamental has been the collaboration with Barbara, Gaia, and Maria Carolina of BABS Art Gallery, who served as the first true testing ground for these creations: a direct, intuitive, and authentic exchange that helped shape the identity of the collection.
The exhibition project is further enriched by the contribution of Paola Stroppiana, curator of the critical essay that will accompany the show and be published in the dedicated catalog.
“Scendo subito” is therefore much more than an exhibition: it is an invitation to slow down, to listen to matter, to be surprised by the evocative power of small things. A narrative in fragments—made of threads, metals, voids, and presences—that unites formal rigor with conceptual lightness, in perfect harmony with the identity of BABS Art Gallery.
